The team at SCM Turbo recently demonstrated their willingness to go the extra mile to resolve an issue with a turbo installation for a distributor’s customer. The turbo from SCM was supplied by Partic Motor Spares to JB Tours in Nottingham, and was being fitted on a Cummins L10 engine. The fitter reported a lot of oil leaking in to the turbo housings after first fitting the turbo and running the engine, and suspected that the turbo was faulty. Partic reported the issue to the SCM technical team, who then chose to get in touch with the fitter directly to try and resolve the issue. The fitter and SCM were not able to conclusively diagnose the root cause of the oil leaks from the initial phone call. Rather than leave the customer with a vehicle stuck in the workshop and no certain way to resolve the issue, SCM chose to send 2 of its lead technicians out to help diagnose and address the issue on site.
When on site the technicians partially stripped and inspected the turbo, confirming that there were no issues with the turbo components. Once reassembled, they re-fitted the turbo to the engine and advised the fitter on the best practice procedures for turbo priming and first-run, in order to avoid oil leaks or other running issues. It was identified the original oil leak issue was likely due to not running the engine under load when first running the turbo. This is an important step for the oil seals to correctly and permanently seal. In order to be certain that the original issue didn’t reoccur, the SCM technicians went on a test run with the vehicle. Initially the engine generated a lot of smoke, but shortly after stopped smoking as the turbo sealed correctly, and ran perfectly thereafter.
The customer was extremely grateful to SCM for the assistance provided in getting the vehicle back on the road quickly. For the distributor, Partic Motor Spares, it meant a very satisfied customer, and a potential warranty dispute avoided.
